She let him know while he slept
On a night shift, like many others…In one of the rooms, a young couple although aged by suffering of so many hours and days of agony. Her with her body battered. Him with his soul in pain. I hear the bell of the room ring but there was no wait. Someone comes to me broken in tears telling me: I fell asleep! and she’s gone! He said between sobs: I woke up because I noticed a presence and when I opened my eyes, there she was, in front of me. She came closer to where I was and said: my love…it’s done, wake up.. the time has come. It seemed surreal, I couldn’t believe it, so I approached her bed, she had stopped breathing… I know she let me know. I don’t care if they don’t believe me, I know what I saw. But, why did I let myself fall asleep? I shouldn’t have been asleep!
I consoled him and told him I believed him, that he shouldn’t feel guilty. That the fact he had fallen asleep was a relief for her so she could leave without anyone holding her back. I accompanied him to the room and he sat down next to her. While he cried and caressed her he said: rest my love… rest now.
To respect his privacy, I went closer and said: if you need anything, just call me.
